Im still adding details to this mural.  I just thought those two doors right next to each other looked so weird.  One goes to an upstairs bedroom that I use as my studio and the other is a storage space.  I had curtains covering the whole wall for years but they made the room seem darker and smaller.  I was hesitant to paint something on the wall because there is already so much art in the house and I didn't want it to become too chaotic… but I think that ship sailed a long time ago, mural or no mural.  I think keeping it black and white was a good choice.

Three of four pieces I will have hanging in the portrait show at Studio One Art Center in Oakland, California.

Hello! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanks Giving! Recently I started series of small cocktail paintings. These were designed specifically for home decor rather than say, "Fine Art". I will be making several versions of each one and expect that they will get more neato with each reproduction. The images below are the 1st four compositions in various stages of completion and photographed from different angles. The originals are currently hanging at Art Thou Gallery in Berkeley California: The prints which are indistinguishable from original artwork, are available in my etsy store.

Happy fall everyone!  I thought I'd take some time today and explain a little bit about my process.  Below is my original acrylic painting, Pretty Bird:

This painting was painted directly on to canvas board.  Canvas board is my favorite surface to work on because of the stiffness of the panel.  It also is less absorbent than canvas which I like because I do a lot of washes. The artwork below here is a hand embellished print layered with resin, acrylic paint and glitter.

I find making these prints very valuable because it allows me to experiment with medium without fear of destroying the original.  Im left with neat little reproductions that look like original pieces because they are so richly textured.  And I can sell them for a fraction of the originals!

For me, making art is an adventure.  I'm as excited by a happy accident or new discovery as I am when  I ride a roller coaster ( riding roller coasters is as daredevil as I get).  I'm constantly trying new ideas, and have little problem destroying hours of work in the name of experimentation.  If it doesn't work, such is life, I'll try not to do it again.  The acquisition of computer skills a few years ago has tipped the balance in favor of creation, rather than destruction for me. I now take photos of my works in progress all along the way then slip them in to Photoshop or Illustrator and tear them apart and put them back together- however I want.  This is particularly therapeutic when I'm stuck.  If I like it I will print it out on artist quality canvas photography paper, mount it on wooden artist panels and experiment on it; later adding what I feel is successful into the " original piece".   I usually end up with at least three versions of what I think are best described as studies before the " original piece" is complete.
 
Resin is one of my favorite mediums to work with.  I love its clarity, thickness and unifying quality.  I love painting and gluing things  in-between layers of resin.  I love the veil of dimension each layer creates and my larger pieces are often quite heavy.   Glitter is another one of my faves.  It looks magical under a layer of resin especially if it has been obscured lightly, or heavily by a wash of transparent paint and well incorporated into the composition.
